Ancient Highways:

Ancestral Travels

This exhibit looks at Aboriginal relationships to land and water from an economic perspective. The canoe is an indigenous object that transported people and goods across the landscape. The ancient portage route known as the Toronto Carrying Place facilitated the long-distance interaction and exchange of canoes, people and goods. This was a form of cross-continental “free trade” that existed long before the arrival of Europeans.
